Critical Investigation: Learner Response

1. Teacher feedback:
WWW:

  • Some references to wider context and the socio-political issues affecting black people.
  • Fairly well presented bibliography, although lacking books in works cited needs to be at least 10
  • Fairly well structured and written (although the conclusion is weak and needs re-writing)
EBI
  • Explain the theories you include (there are lots of them - well done... two step flow model, hypodermic needle model, cultural imperialism, uses and gratification, medhurst, perkins, mulvey) and include a reference to them in the footnotes
  • More close textual analysis of how representations are constructed (using media language)
  • Consideration of institution - who produces the texts? Are they black?
Student feedback:
WWW:
  • Very good use of media terminology and theories
  • Good interpretation of quotes and use of MIGRAIN
  • Good use of variety of different theories to support your evidence/info
  • Fluent and analytical explanation of topic with good use of critical debates
EBI:
  • Embed the theory instead of brackets, punctuation, you need commas
  • Expand on some points and include names of theory for extra references
  • Mention examples of black history so essay can become stronger
  • Include more about media technology and the effect of globalisation on the media
Aiming to get 28-32 marks

Improvements:
  • Expand on the textual analysis with the use of media language(MIGRAIN)
  • Overall, better use of MIGRAIN in the essay
  • Wider context needs to be enhanced with more examples
  • More books referenced which means a trip to the BFI
  • Conclusion needs to be fixed
  • Grammar and punctuation needs to be checked for a fluent flow of writing
